Junior badminton titles
The under 16 mixed doubles final at the recent Sunbatta South Island junior batminton championships in Timaru was an all-Canterbury affair, with Mark Brownlie and Charmaine Hoogeveen beating Kerry Williams and Rachel Hoogeveen in two sets.
The Hoogeveen sisters contained to win the girls’ doubles in straight sets and they did not drop a set in any contest. Rachel Hoogeveen, however, lost the singles final to the top seed, Nicola Baird, of West Coast. Results (players from Canterbury unless stated otherwise) were:— Under 16 Boys’ singles.— Semi-finals: G. Taylor (Otago) beat K. Thomas (South Canterbury), 1-15, 15-4, 17-16; T. Yee (Otago) beat G. Key (Otago), 15-7, 15-3. Final: Yee beat Taylor, 15-12, 12-15, 15-10.
Boys’ doubles.— Semifinals: F. Wyeth and G. Hamilton (Southland) beat K. Williams and M. Brownlie, 1618, 15-9, 15-3; J. Weaich and Key (Otago) beat B. Potter and Yee (Otago), 13-15, 15-6,
15-5. Final: Wyeth and Hamilton beat Weaich and Key, 1517, 18-16, 15-8. Girls’ singles.— Semi-finals: N. Baird (West Coast) beat R. Bright, 11-4, 11-5; R. Hoogeveen beat J. Adamson (Nelson), 1-11, 11-4, 11-4. Final: Baird beat Hoogeveen, 11-2, 11-3.
Girls’ doubles.— Semifinals: C. and R. Hoogeveen beat B. Mitchell and J. Baird (Southland), 15-7, 15-9; F. Bergman and N. Baird (West Coast) beat K. Lowery and D. Papp (Otago), 15-3, 15-11. Final: C. and R. Hoogeveen beat Bergman and Baird 15-8, 15-3.
Mixed doubles.— Semifinals: Brownlie and C. Hoogeveen beat M. Floris and Bright, 6-15, 15-4, 15-8; Williams and R. Hoogeveen beat G. Hamilton and S. Topping (Southland), 15-7, 152. Under 14 Boys’ singles.— Semi-finals: R. Key (Otago) beat N. Roy (Southland), 15-3, 15-3; D. Marshall (Southland) beat J. Partel (Otago), 18-13, 15-4. Final: Key beat Marshall, 155, 15-1.
Boys’ doubles.— Semifinals: Roy and Marshall beat A. McGee and T. Raines (Southland), 15-2, 15-5; Partel and Key beat J. Henderson and L. Hinsley (Otago), 15-3, 15-0. Final: Partel and Key beat Roy and Marshall, 15-10, 15-6. .. ;

Girls’ doubles.— Semifinals: Doherty and Chapman beat N. Hodges and N. Friend (Otago), 15-1, 15-4; K. Smith and Kilpatrick beat J. Goble and K. McKenzie, 18-15, 1511. Mixed doubles.— Semifinals: Key and Smith beat Roy and Chapman, 15-7, 15-8; Marshall and Doherty beat Partel and Kilpatrick, 15-2, 15-6.
