Baker dominates yachting

The young Timaru Laser class skipper, Michelle Baker, finished the final day of the women’s yachting selection trials on Lyttelton Harbour yesterday as the most successful sailor In the over-all championships. Baker finished the series with an astonishing nine wins and a second place, to finish with the perfect score of zero points after the worst race is dropped. In the national youth championships, Bruce Trotter (Auckland) continued his dominance of the sailboard series, winning the final two races to take the title with zero points. The Canterbury pair of Glen Mckenzie, and Paul Allen wrapped up the last race in the Phase II class to conclude a successful series with five wins. Close racing was once again recorded in the Laser class, with Richard Kriletich (Auckland) and lain Purdie (Tauranga) winning the last two races. But Nicholas Burfoot (Auckland) finished with a fourth in the final event to take the championship. In the Sunburst class, Kelvin Harrap and Edmund Tam (Napier), who have had an indifferent series, held off a strong challenge in the final race from Mark and Craig Christensen (Wakatere) to clinch the title.
