Moulders back at foundry

Nine moulders who were to return to work at a Bromley foundry last Friday changed their minds when the company insisted they resign from one union and join another, said the Moulders’ Union secretary, Mr Norman Dewes. The nine were dismissed by the company, R. Buchanan, and Sons, Ltd, on May 13 because of a strike over a relativity payment.

Mr Dewes said that the moulders returned to work yesterday after the company relented on its union membership stance.

The company had now agreed to abide by whatever decision on coverage was made by the unions on the site. It had wanted them to resign from the Moulders’ Union and join the Engineers’ Union. The relativity issue would be negotiated with the help of a third party, said Mr Dewes. Three moulders returned to work while the other nine were on strike. They resigned from the Moulders’ Union and joined the Engineers’ Union. The membership status of those three was still to be resolved, Mr Dewes said.
