Govt allocates Roads Board extra $14M

Wellington reporter

The National Roads Board has been given by the Government another $l4 million this financial year. This brings the total budget to $449 million, compared with last year’s figure of $406 million. The board’s chairman, the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman, said the increase stemmed from a review of user charges and would make funds available for repairing flood damage in South Canterbury.

“I do not think the public have realised even now just how much dam-

age was done in this flood. Hundreds of kilometres of road had to be reinstated and more than 30 bridges needed structural repair or replacement,” Mr Colman said. Of the extra funding, $8.75 million will be spent on construction. Projects include stage two of the northern outlet and a new Malta! bridge in Nelson; the reconstruction of bends at Leithfield, the gun club corner bn Johns Road, Belfast, and the Waltham overbridge in Christchurch; and seal extensions at Wanaka South and at Bradys Creek, north of Alexandra.
