N.Z. grants $50,000 to Solomons

Wellington reporter New Zealand has offered a $50,000 grant to the Solomon Islands Government as an initial response to the havoc wreaked by Cyclone Namu. The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr O’Flynn, announced the decision yesterday. He said the Solomons authorities were still assessing the full extent of the damage but that it was known several people

had died, thousands were homeless, and roads were badly disrupted. The main immediate priorities for relief were food, shelter, and medical care but the exact needs had yet to be determined, Mr O’Flynn said. New Zealand Defence Forces were on standby. There had been no report of New Zealanders being injured, and the Government was monitoring events closely, he said.
