Just reward for Dixie Zephyr

PA Hamilton Dixie Zephyr gained a well-deserved success when she scored narrowly in the Blandford Lodge Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at Matamata yesterday. One of the team prepared by Jim Gibbs and Roger James on the Matamata track, Dixie Zephyr, the topwelght for the event, just lasted to beat a fellow Matamata galloper, Caurnie, by a short neck. After being given a perfect run in the trail by his rider, Bob Vance, Dixie Zephyr took over early in the home straight and showed plenty of determination to hold the other horse at bay. Antisimo took third some two and a quarter lengths behind and the pacemaker, Call Me Kiwi, was next home a further three-quarters of a length back.

It was just reward for Dixie Zephyr, which has been most consistent in her latest racing. Her form before yesterday included three seconds, a fourth and a fifth placing in her most recent five attempts. The second leg, the Holdaway Motors Handicap, saw the return to winning form of Catering King. Ridden by Lance O’Sullivan, the Danseur Etoile three-year-old raced behind midfield to the turn and was then brought forward on a well-timed run in the centre of the track. In the final stages, he proved too strong for Super Roo, with Haig a couple of lengths further away. However, after a judicial inquiry, the second and third placings were reversed. Catering King, an impressive winner of his first two races last season, was only eighth last time in the Avondale Championship Stakes (2000 m but back to a sprint yesterday, was far too good for his rivals.
