Phareef impresses at Woodville

Special correspondent Palmerston North Phareef looked ready to run out a strong 2200 m when he galloped at Woodville yesterday morning. He starts in the Oroua Downs Handicap at the Foxton meeting on Saturday. Fast work took place bn the course proper, which was cutting out. Phareef worked over

1200 m in 1:19.7, the last 600 m in 39.25. The four-year-old has shown his winning form up to 1600 m at Trentham, but showed middle-distance potential when he “flew” home for second to Metro in the 2<)ooin Woodville Trainers’ Race at Woodville two starts back.

Tarawera jumped eight steeplechase fences with no problems, before running 1200 m in 1:20.6, the last 600 m in 38s. It was a sound trial for the Dornbroski Steeplechase, in which he has only 59kg. This is rather kind to a horse which won the Hawke’s Bay Steeples four starts back. Race rival, Valdee, went 1200 m in 1:23.2, the last 600 m in 41.55. He nearly fell at the first fence at Ellerslie at his

last start, but is normally a safe jumper and he looks close to form. Mark Oulaghan also has Regal Time in the steeplechase.

Hipperial galloped 1600 m in 1:53, picking up Lunar Trail at the 1400 m. No sectional times were taken in the early light. They race at Waikato this week. Prinz Eugen ran 1600 m in 1:54. Tanril went 800 m in 54.65. She is a form runner in the second division of the maiden event at Foxton, but has drawn the extreme outside. Son O’Mine went 600 m in 39.25, while a Wolverton filly with Jeff Lynds went 39.85.

Sir Brauner and Lightning Bay galloped 1000 m in 1:5.4, the last 600 m in 395. Sir Brauner resumes in the Moutoa Handicap, while Lightning Bay is in the Trial Maiden. Reverse Charge and Our Ransom clocked 1:6.4 for 1000 m, the 600 m in 38.85.

Kiowa and Captain Calico galloped 1000 m in 1:5.6, the last 600 m in 395. Leading Glance and Roller sped over 1200 m in 1:18.2a the final 600 m in 395. pother Earth and a

Telereign filly went 800 m in 535, the last 600 m in 39.15.

Bridge Player went 1200 m in 1:19.7, the last 600 m in 40.25. He is in the Foxton Fries Cup on Saturday. Whata Beauty, which looks a better prospect in the same race, worked easily over 1200 m in 1:24.6, the last 600 m in 41s. She went another good race with no luck at Trentham last time, after her fourth in the Hawke’s Bay Cup. Valady and Cheval Kingdom went 800 m in 55.25, the last 600 m in 40s.

Normandie led Prendre for most of the way but

they were almost on terms after running 1600 m, the last 1200 m in 1:20.1, and final 600 m in 40.25. Prendre lines up against Phareef on Saturday. Come Forward and a Never Till Dawn gelding sprinted 600 m in 37.15.

Wendy’s Choice and Royal Showoff pleased when they ran 800 m in 52.35, the last 600 m in 38s. Otoia Belle went 1000 m in 1:7, speeding up over the last 600 m in 38s. Look at Me, withdrawn from his Trentham engagement on Saturday, has been sent to join the Marsh team in Brisbane.
