Verlaines in final cut

nevin-topp

The Verlaines head north from Dunedin next week to kill two birds with one stone — cut their latest disc and make a video tape.

The Dunedin band recorded a double-A single, “Doomsday” and “New Kind of Heaven” at Mascot Studios, Auckland, in February and March, and the band head to Wellington next week to cut it at the EMI Studios. Because they, have to head north, they have incorporated a few shows on their travels, including two evenings at the Gladstone Tavern on Tuesday and Wednesday. For the guitarist, Graeme Donnes, it gives the band a chance to introduce some new material on their way north, which culminates in some dates at Auckland, plus the possibility of making a couple of

videos to go with the singles.

He believes that the present impasse on the showing of overseas rock videos in New Zealand television gives an opportunity for the band (and other New Zealand artists) to show off what they can do. But he adds that the difficulty might be over by the time the new Flying Nun single and the videos come out, which is expected to be late June or early July.
