Rich juvenile race at Masterton

PA Wellington The arrival, in the next few days, of the Bletchingly stallion, Lord Ballina, for stud duties has proved a boon for the Masterton Racing Club. With the help of sponsorship from Thoroughbred Holdings and the Lord Ballina Syndicate, headed by Ardsley Stud which will stand the stallion, the Masterton club will next month stage a rich two-year-old event — the Lord Ballina Nursery. To be worth $12,000

initially, the race will be over 1400 m. It replaces the $2300 Eketahuna Juvenile (1200 m on the club’s winter programme. Lord Ballina won 10 races from 43 starts, including the Gadsden Stakes at Flemington and the Rothmans 100,000 at Doomben, for earnings of $Au5t316,285. The Auckland-based Thoroughbred Holdings purchased and syndicated the stallion, with Ardsley — just south of the Opaki course — taking a major share.
