Railway increases badminton lead

On a night when three of the four matches needed a countback of games or points, Railway increased its lead in the A grade inter-club badminton competition to seven points at the Skellerup Hall on Tuesday evening. Only one contest, between Air New Zealand and Hagley I, had a clear-cut winner, Air New Zealand being too strong in both singles and doubles play. The crunch tie between Railway and the team just one point behind it, BryndwrY.M.C.A., was very close, each team winning four matches. The countback revealed nine individual games were won by both teams, but Railway got the vital extra six points by accruing 230 points, compared with 205.

After the singles matches, Bryndwr held a handy 3-1 advantage. Had Mark Reid managed to win just one game against Geoff Miller, Railway’s most experienced player, in the No. 2 men’s singles, Bryndwr would have sneaked home in the countback. He had a chance in the second game, but lost in. setting, 18-14. South Brighton had its first win of the competition, albeit narrowly, against Hagley 11. The superiority of the women from Christchurch I carried it to a TO games to eight win over Christchurch 11. Terri Perry and Robyn Haley were too strong for Lyndal Smith and Robyn White, in both singles and doubles play. Points after four rounds: Railway 46, Bryndwr 39, A.N.Z. 38, Christchurch I 28,
