Burnside men keep open squash lead
Bumside maintained its lead in the Skellerup Sport Star men’s open grade inter-club squash competition with a solid win over Linwood in the latest round on Tuesday evening. The .only loss for Bum side was in the top position, wiwre Linwood’s Craig Hibbert exacted revenge over Mark Crosbie for a defeat in the final of the Ashburton Open 10 days ago.
Sumner remained well in reach of the Blank Trophy again with a clean sweep over Christchurch Football. Two of the players, Paul Viggers and John Christensen, managed straight-game wins. For Lancaster Park, which secured its second competition win, Robbie Burnett, at No. 1, conceded only six points against Lyn Sparks (Marist). So far he has yet to drop a game. In the women’s open grade competition, Mount Pleasant extended its lead after beating its closest rival, Linwood, on a games countback. In the final contest, Ann Harliwich (Mount Pleas-
ant) needed to beat Julie Quinn within four games to give her team victory. In fact she won in the minimum distance, allowing her opponent just eight points. Earlier Carolyn Viggers (Mount Pleasant) was all aggression in disposing of another leading Canterbury player, Freda Walker, 3-0, while Sue Mullaly lost out to Linwood’s Chris Wood in an absorbing five-set battle.
