Kohanga Reo grant
A $2OOO council grant for the Kohango Reo at Te Rangimarie in Gloucester Street was criticised at last evening’s meeting. Cr Helen Garrett said young children were better off not learning Maori. Cr John Burn said that no matter how “trendy” it was it was better for young people to learn the
language “they had to live with.” Cr Vicki Buck said the Kohanga Reo was one of the most exciting developments for many years. All races were welcome to attend and it served not only as a pre-school unit but as an extended family. Cr Mollie Clark said $2OOO was a small price to
pay for such a positive programme. The funds will be used to pay a Maori-speaking tutor to replace a volunteer who had recently left. Government funding is also being sought and if the money is obtained before July the council’s grant will be refunded.
