Group to question building societies
PA Auckland A group which is incensed about rising mortgage interest rates intends to requisition a meeting with representatives from two building societies. After a protest march down Queen Street last evening a co-founder of Protest Against Interest Rates, Ms Kate Ball, said an investigation was needed “to find out just what goes on in these societies.” Two of New Zealand’s most powerful societies, United Building Society and Countrywide Building Society, would be the group’s first targets. Requests from 100 people with accounts at each society were enough to requisition a meeting, she said. As soon as she had enough names she intended to deposit the requisition with the registry office. “We all owe more than we borrowed and it is time we found out what is going on,” Ms Ball said.
