Graf triumphs
■ NZPA-AFP Amelia Island, Florida The top-seed, Steffi Graf, won the second big title of her career when she snatched a thrilling three-set victory over her fellow West German and second-seed, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, in the final of the $U5275,000 ($491 884) Women’s Tennis Association championship at Florida. The relentless baseline precision of Graf, aged 16, ranked the world No. 3 by the W.T.A., eventually
frustrated the exciting serve-and-volley tennis of her tall 22-year-old compatriot, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. The enthralling 2y 2 - hour-battle finally ended when Graf snatched the final set tie-break, 7-3.
Last week Graf won her first circuit tournament when she defeated Chris Evert-Lloyd, of the United States, in the final of the Hilton Head Island event. It was Graf’s first win over the 31-year-old Fort Lauderdale player in seven encounters.
