Vice-Regal ‘perks’ for review?

PA Wellington The Government might review the exemption from paying duty and sales tax enjoyed by Gov-ernors-General. Last year the outgoing Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, bought two Mercedes-Benz cars worth a total of $250,000. A political storm was raised when it became known that he was exempt from paying $85,000 in duty and sales tax on the imported cars. The Labour Party’s Central Regions conference in Levin at the week-end passed a remit calling for withdrawal of a Governor-General’s customs duty and sales tax privileges. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, was not aware of the resolution, but said yesterday the Government ought to examine a proper package of remuneration for GovemorsGeneral. Remuneration and allowances for GovernorsGeneral were based on times when they came to New Zealand from Britain. In Britain the Queen was subject to such taxes. “The times have changed there, but they haven’t changed here,” he said.
