King’s chair for auction

NZPA-AFP Paris A turn-of-the-century “love chair” that enabled a portly British monarch to enjoy peerless positions in love-making was going on sale in Paris today at France’s main auction hall, Drouot. The chair, made in sculpted wood with two metal stirrups on either side of the seat, was set aside for Queen Victoria’s heir, Edward, when he was Prince of Wales and frequented one of Paris’ most famous brothels, the Chabanais.

He was later King Edward VII.

The piece was built in 1890, as part of a decor in the room reserved for the Royal guest, which also featured a swan-shaped bath-tub for champagne baths, historians say. Its owner, an English peer, bought it at an auction in 1951 for 32,000 francs ($8343).
