Burnham made to work for win
Burnham predictably won the senior A grade in the annual Ellesmere seven-a-side rugby tournament at Sheffield Domain on Saturday.
However, its win was not as convincing as many would have thought. A plucky Southbridge side made a valiant attempt for victory and showed a decided superiority when the ball was loose, but lacked the size and the over-all pace of Burnham.
Bumham’s last try, to clinch the final, 12-4, was started from its
own goal-line, and ended with a touchdown between the posts. In its four games to clinch the title, Burnham scored exactly 100 points, the tournament’s best combined total. Grade winners were:— Senior A, Bumham; senior B, Burnham; senior reserve, Springston; under-21, Sheffield; under-18, Leeston; under--16, West Melton; under-14, Waihora; under-13, Lincoln; under-12, Waihora; under-11, Irwell; under-10, Selwyn; under-nine, Leeston.
