Bowls win at home rink

Lloyd Bellis and Alan Quirke delighted their home club crowd with a close win in the Boon Hay club’s Lion professional indoor bowls pairs tournament on Saturday.

They beat Maurice and Paul Berkeley (Linwood Avenue) in a final which developed from a tight drawing game, with Bellis in complete control, to a tense 12-10 finish over the final ends.

Bellis came from 7-5 down with a single and two on the last two ends, to win his semi-final from Gary Lawson (Northcote), in a close-fought game.

Berkeley scored at will to secure his 9-2 semifinal win from Grant Lange (Shirley-St Albans W.M.C.).

The Australian style four-bowl pairs game proved a popular variation of play to the 48 teams invited to play in the tournament.
