Relay competition close

Bascik New Brighton and University shared the honours in the men’s and women’s Hagley relays for harriers in North Bagley Park on Saturday. The racing was close, and the result in doubt until at least midway through the relays, run over a 4km circuit on firm ground. The men ran five laps, the women ran four.

The runner-up in the men’s relay was University and in the women’s section, New Brighton. Both clubs were without some leading runners.

Christchurch finished third in both the men’s and women’s relays, and in the veteran men’s was second to Olympic.

Michael Gilchrist ran the second lap for Technical and took it into the lead with the fastest time of the day after Colin McDonald had brought the team home second in the opening lap. Technical did well to hold on to fourth place, its best for several years.

The other Commonwealth Games athletics representative competing in the relays was David Burridge, who was third equal fastest with McDonald and helped his team University to second place. The Canterbury 1500 m champion, Phil Clode, (University) was fifth fastest
