Charisma Y.M.CA. and Burnham gained their first competition points of the season. Y.M.C.A. Ud too much height for Rebels to win, 45-28, and Burnham’s strong counter-attacking moves took it to a 63 47 win over Continental Caterers Rangiora. '? Placings in the Patrons Trophy round are.—

Barbara Carr and Jackie Cook established goofl, midcourt control as the Cleckers captain, Sharon Coistable, took over the coach’s pole in the absence of Angel Hill.

The match turned scrappy late in the first half as the foul count mounted and Halswell’s frustration was echoed by its vocal coach, Russell Berry. Checkers led, 30-15, at half-time.

Halswell shook off some of its lethargy in the second spell and, inspired by a gritty performance by Mandy Collins, played more to its real ability and matched Checkers basket for basket throughout the half.

Megan Cassidy dominated the offensive boards for Checkers, especially in the second spell and had the better of the duel with her league team-mate, Sue Bennie, making her first appearance after being sidelined several weeks with a back Injury. The sisters Leonie and Connie Erb were also reliable.

Marinda Van Vuuren lacked her usual confidence while Marian Bain, who had been playing well, did not get much court time. It was left to the more senior Halswell members, Kathy Slave and Sally Elliott, to show any life but they lacked support.

The referees were B. Martin and W. Stanley. Scoring details:— Checkers: M. Cassidy 17, B. Carr 8, L. Erb 6, C. Erb 4, J. Cook 4, D. Chase 4, C. Heremaia 3. Halswell: M. Collins 11, K. Siave 7, S. Leanne McClintock and Isobel Hartley and later by Donna Broughton gave Y.M.CA., . the former Malrehau team, the advantage over the Mid-Canterbury side, Rebels. Margaret Cuttance was again the strength of Mairehau’s attack, driving consistently to finish with 19 points before fouling out in the fifteenth minute of the second spell. Lynette McGrath was again to the fore for Rebels although she lacked her usual accuracy until later in the match. She received sound support from Ann Campbell and Greta Shanks. Sarah Moon, aged 16, played with enthusiasm.

Cuttance took Malrehau to a 9-4 lead after 10 minutes and, assisted by Hartley, put Mairehau ahead, 22-9, by half-time.

Rebels restricted Y.M.CA. to four baskets in the third quarter and trailing 18-31 after 10 min. Mairehau’s better team effort allowed it to control the final quarter and to finish strongly ahead.

Burnham 63, Continental Caterers Rangiora 47 Rangiora attacked strongly in the first quarter and after 13 min. was in command,

leading, 21-14. Burnnam lifted its efforts, inspired by the presence of the former Palmerston North player, Yvonne Crichton-Hill. Although lacking initial accuracy, she used her height and build to grab many rebounds which she quickly turned into points. Crichton-Hill recently married a leading Converse Canterbury player, John Hill.

Burnham ran in 14 successive points in five minutes with a good display of team basketball and helped by a lack-lustre effort from Rangiora. By half-time Burnham led 33-24.

Bumham again dominated most of the second spell, Joanne Thomson and Christine Williams enthusiastically supporting the centre-court efforts of Rhonda and Puhi Milner.

Rangiora slumped to trail 33-53 after 12 min. with Penny Rollinson Inspiring a better effort in the fourth quarter. Jenny Harris made another useful contribution which included a towering three-pointer. Rose Edyvean, Rhonda Cooke and the sprightly Andrea Smith all worked hard but failed to finish well.
