Coup’s third title

The Kaiapoi bowler, Travis Coup, added to his great record as a pairs skip when he won the Christchurch open pairs title for an unprecedented third time at Tai Tapu on Saturday.

As with the earlier wins, in 1977 and 1981, Coup had George

Matthews as his lead and this was, in fact, the fourth time they had been in the final in the last five years. They were runnersup in each of the last two In Saturday’s final Coup met a little-known Halswell combination of Bob Mather and Eddie Simpson.

The scoring was close for a long time, 12-12 after 11 ends, before Coup took the last four ends to win, 19-12.

In the semi-finals Coup narrowly beat Tom Dixon (South Brighton), who also was seeking a third win in the event, and Simpson had a clear victory over Roy Bailey (Linwood). One of the best matches of the day came in the quarter-finals, where Coup scored a three on the last end to beat Wally Wilkinson (Beckenham) by one. Wilkinson was trying to complete a double of the two centre pairs titles in the same season. Results:-
