Aussie Bound obliges

After five seconds earlier on the circuit Dean Morel, aged 15, an apprentice from Tuahiwi, was wondering if his first winning ride would continue to elude him. But the breakthrough for him came in the Cable Price Toyota Handicap on the first day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s meeting yestersday. An apprentice in the Harris stable young Morel achieved - the breakthrough on Aussie Bound, a three-year-old Aythorpe gelding racing in North Island interests, but with Ray Harris figuring as part owner. Harris’s partners in Aussie Bound are Messrs Gerry Hayes, Barry Livingston and Norman Paterson, of Lower Hutt. They did not make the trip south for yesterday’s win but plan to be at Richmond Park for the second day of the meeting on Monday.

Aussie Bound made all the running over 1400 m yesterday and clung tenaciously to his lead in the straight. He came out on top by three parts of a length from the Goretrained Dear Sir. The North Island pair, Relinquish and Royal Communique, could not be separated for third. Binkie’s Pal, the best backed South Island runner was slowest away, dashed through to reach a position forward of the middle of the field, but could make no further headway from the home turn and finished fifth. Abit Royal, the win favourite, made a short-lived challenge up the straight then faded to finish eighth.
