AUSTRALIA Record levels at close

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed at record levels, but strong demand for a handful of quality industrial stocks was tempered by falls in the mining sector, brokers said. The all-ordinaries index rose 2.3 points from Thursday’s record close to a new peak of 1218.8. The all-indus-trials index gained 12.8 points from Thursday’s record finish to a record 1983.9. The allresources index, however, shed 5.1 points to 640.7, and the gold index dropped 21.9 points to 917.6. National turnover was 63.2 M shares worth sAustl3o.oM with rises outnumbering falls 299 to 213. BHP climbed 2c to 736 after trading between 738 and 730 on turnover of 2.2 M shares. Bell Resources and the Bell Group gained 10 c each to 520 and 810 as speculation about the Bell-BHP-Elders IXL developments persisted. Elders IXL fell 8c to 452 from a high of 455. Heavyweight miner CRA dropped

14c to 686 and CSR slid 2c to 330. Elsewhere on the mining boards, MIM dropped 13c to 242, Western Mining 10c to 332, Bougainville 2c to 268, and Comalco the same to 233. Gold miners also performed poorly as international gold bullion prices stagnated. Gold Mines of Kaigoorlie shed 16c to 770. Emperor 15c to 330, Poseidon the same to 230 and Kidston 10c to 560. Strong institutional demand for a few quality industrial stocks gave support to the allordinaries index. Orbital en-gine-maker Sarich led the field, gaining 90c to 1270 and touching 1290. News Corporation rose 60c to 1910, Amatil 30c to 810, FAI 26c to 776, and Brambles, 20c stronger at 690. Westfield Holdings peaked at 2300 before closing steady at 2250, while profit takers sold Coles Myer down 12c to 608.
