Palestinians
Sir,—The article on Palestinians on March 12 contains misconceptions. The impression given is that Jews dispossessed the “Palestinians.” A report by the Institute for Palestine Studies shows that the majority of the Arab refugees in 1948 were not expelled and that 68 per cent left without seeing an Israeli soldier. However, of greater concern is the- way in which the United Nations, through U.N.R.W.A., has blown the problem out of proportion. Normally refugees were (hose who were leave
“permanent” or “habitual” homes. The definition for “Palestinian” refugee, however, has been modified to include as “refugees” those who were in Palestine within two years of the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948. Israel has accommodated the Jewish refugees who were forced to leave the surrounding Arab countries, in addition to European Jewish refugees. There is room in the Arab countries for so-called Palestinian refugees. — Yours, etc.,
