Students face hardship early

More students are in financial trouble at the beginning of this year than usual, according to the president of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association, Ms Jo Dinsdale.

The association already had received two applications from students for money from a special hardship fund. This fund was not well known, and usually did not attract many applications, Ms Dinsdale said.

“As far as I am aware, we have not previously had any at this time of the year.” '

The two students who applied had not been, able to afford their fees, she said. Students faced fees of up to $268 this year.

Ms Dinsdale also said that many students had approached the student job search organisers to try to find part-time work during the year.
