Action wanted on school term

PA Wellington The Education Boards’ Association is concerned about lack of action on plans to introduce a modified three-term school year in 1987. The association says the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, will have to decide “very soon” if the changes will take place next year.

Mr Marshall had planned to introduce the modified terms next year, involving an extended mid-term break in the winter months of the second term. The Minister supports a four-term year but says this will not occur until after more discussion between teacher groups and the wider community. The association says it would be in the best interests of teachers and children to have a modified three-term year and hopes it can begin next year.

In a statement yesterday after a two-day conference, the association said it was also worried about Cabinet decisions on transport policy and at the level of incidental and maintenance grants announced for this year. It wants a joint inspection of all transport services to be made before routes may have to be curtailed. It claims insufficient grants will mean that school committees will need more money from parents, and worsening of boards’ maintenance problems.
