New Services head appointed

Wellington reproter Dr Rod Deane, the Deputy-Governor of the Reserve Bank, has been appointed the new chairman of the State Services Commission.

Dr Deane, aged 44, will replace Dr Mervyn Probine, who will retire in April. Dr Deane will become New Zealand’s top public servant after being Deputy-Governor of the Reserve Bank for four years. Before that, he was the bank’s chief mist and head .of its economics department for six years.

He was an alternate executive director of the International Monetary Fund in Washington from 1974-1976. Dr Deane was a lecturer in economics and examiner at the Victoria University and Wellington Polytechnic from 1964 to 1978, and in 1967 gained a ph.D at Victoria. He is the author of numerous economic publications.

Dr Deane is married with one child. He is the vice-president of Zealand Society fogjthe Intellectually Handicapped.
