Bay beats Nelson
PA Nelson Hawke’s Bay yesterday ended Nelson’s Übix Cup reign, finishing ahead on the first innings at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park. A superb unbeaten innings of 189 by the captain, Scott Briasco, swept the challengers past Nelson’s 366-run first innings total yesterday morning.
The teairi went to lunch at 419 for six and was awarded the match when it was abandoned after an ominous downfall during the break. With the match doubling as both a Übix Cup
challenge and the Chapple Cup final, Hawke’s Bay has now assumed the mantle of New Zealand’s top minor association. It will defend the cup against Hutt Valley in Napier this week-end. The experienced righthander, Briasco, faced 392 balls during his 420 minutes at the crease scoring exactly 100 runs
off boundaries. Scores: Nelson, first innings 366. Hawke’s Bay, First innings 419/6 (N. Speak 80, S. Briasco n.o. 189, P. Dailey 44, S. Duff 34, T. Sail n.o. 29; D. Leonard 2/60, D. Woodward 2/98).
