Learning to box
Sir,—Ernest Hemingway emphasised the truth that civilisation rests on a foundation of courage. It is no accident that Pat O’Boyle, who showed immense courage and persistence in opposing the tyranny of a trade union, was once a boxer. Boxing, which Margaret Grover unjustly attacks, helps to increase not only physical courage but also moral courage. One is more willing to say what one thinks regardless of risks of a punch on the nose or of the fact that one is in a minority. Once, in Fiji, an attempt was made to murder me with a knife while I slept. Fortunately, my mosquito net deflected the first knife blow. After that, facing a stronger armed opponent with my bare hands in the dark, it was only the fact that I had trained as a boxer that enabled me to survive. So good luck to Kevin Barry’s efforts.—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. February 20, 1986.
