TV coverage of elections
SifC — I cannot help feeling sympathy for Mrs Aquino in the lack of television coverage for her election campaign. I was. a candidate in the Timaru byelection last year in which I, too, received little or no television coverage. A perusal of the law governing elections in New Zealand will show that elections are to do with individuals, both candidates and electors, not political parties. It is the beauty of our system that all shades of opinion can be catered for. Yet Television New Zealand, a taxpayerfunded organisation, saw fit at Timaru to direct coverage to only some candidates, specifically the television debate, which it deemed two candidates to be losers, and did not invite them to take part As Mrs Aquino says, “Democracy was the loser in the Philippines” — perhaps we lost a little in Timaru as well. — Yours, etc.,
ALAN FALLOON. February 19, 1986.
