Drug laws

Sir, —Of course the police are losing the fight against illegal drugs. An increasing number of New Zealanders are coming into contact with apparently normal people who use illegal drugs. An increasing number of persons are making large amounts of money from the sale of these drugs. This combination of social familiarity and good profit margins ensures the continued flourishing of this new “growth industry.” I do not condone this, neither am I suggesting that

illegal drug use is going to provide the answers to the search for a happy end fulfilling life. The psychedelic drugs may provide an insight, perhaps even an understanding of, the mystery of life; but. so might various spiritual masters, runners’ high or even chocolate fish. I am suggesting that making these substances illegal only ensures overpriced, adulterated drugs and very rich criminals, neither of which I particularly want in my ideal society. — Yours, etc.,

DAVE BOYD. February 17, 1986.
