Teachers, Nats draw club fire

The Sunday Club has criticised teachers and the National Party education spokesman, Miss Ruth Richardson, for their performance during the teachers’ pay dispute. After a meeting of the club, a National Party dissident group, yesterday, its leader, Mr Bert Walker, said: "The Sunday Club concedes that many teachers give their time unstintingly to their pupils and their schools but we think that for teachers to go on strike is unprofessional and regrettable. “It sets a shocking example, lacks discipline, and neglect of the children must inevitably be the result.

“On the other hand, we are disappointed with the performance of the National Party shadow minister of education. “Some distinguished headmasters have recently stated that New Zealand education is in a state of crisis, but we have not heard the voice of Miss Richardson joining their criticism ... “Once again, the National Party in Opposition has proved itselfgineffective.”
