PA Invercargill Brent Paterson, of the Coringa Club, winner of the Canterbury championship a fortnight ago, won the 72-hole South Island strokeplay championship at the Green Acres Country Club at the week-end.

The 25-year-old finished with a one-over-par total of 289 and won by two strokes from another Cantabrian, John Crawford-Smith (Russley).

The young Aucklander, Geoff Stephens, who came south to defend the title he won at Waitikiri last year, was never a serious contender and finished in a tie for tenth 15 strokes behind Paterson.
