Surf test to Aust.

PA Gisborne The Australian amateur surfing team won the first test of the Countrywide series near Gisborne yesterday, but not without tough opposition from New Zealand. The final was held in clean, Im conditions at Makorori beach and was won by Mark Sainsbury, of Australia. Australians were second and third — Glen and Richard Kelly — and Gisborne’s Mark Foley was fourth after losing points in a controversial interference ruling. Taranaki’s Erin Saunders

gave the Australians something to think about when he beat Sainsbury and the Australian whizz-kid,; Jason Buttenshaw, in the first heat Buttenshaw went on to win the junior event from his team-mate. Matt Branson, and Auckland’s Andrew Byers. Australia was too strong in the women’s event with Connie Nixon and Sandie Crago first and second and Auckland’s Jeannie Shanks third. Australia goes into the next test at New Plymouth with 66 points to New Zealand’s 34.
