S. Brighton recaptures bowls title
South Brighton I recaptured the premier division three-fours bowls title when it beat the winner for the last three years, Papanui I, in an exciting final at Christchurch yesterday.
The contest rested on the final end of the last of the three games to finish. Gavin Good easily beat Brian McGowan to put South Brighton one up, but John Gill levelled the game scores when he beat Graham Stanley in a tight match.
The third game between Warren Fitchett (South Brighton) and Jack Dale. Dale was ahead 8-2 early, but the scores were tied at 14-14 after eighteen ends and there was another deadlock at 15-15 playing the last end.
Dale had the shot after the first eight bowls. It was a full-length head and Dale’s second, Brian Neal, took the jack back even further with a toucher. However, South Brighton .did have a target and having missed his previous five drives the South Brighton No. 3, Peter Meier, was probably due' to hit one.
And he did, taking out Neal’s toucher to put South Brighton two up and he drew a handy third shot with his second delivery.
Dale had no option but to drive for the jack and when he missed twice the title was South Brighton’s, two games to one. The winning South Brighton team was:Peter Grealish, Tony Thomas, Dave Wadman, Gavin Good (s); Barry Jones. Eddie Archer, Peter Meier, Warren
Fitchett (s); Dick Blom, Harry Frame, Noel Flewellen, Graham Stanley (s). There was also an exciting finish to the first division final, between Kaiapoi I and Homby W.M.C. I.
