Sheep-shipment decision soon

PA Wellington A decision on whether modifications to the livesheep carrier Merino Express are adequate is expected to be made by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, early this week.

A spokesman for his office said Mr Moyle had received a report on the ship on Thursday. Mr Moyle had further questions about the alterations. He expected answers soon and would then decide whether to allow the shipments to continue.

On her previous Merino Express voyage to Mexico, 433 of the 17,641 sheep aboard died.

Mr Don Tate, general manager of the live sheep exporting company, Animal Enterprises, said that the main work on the ship’s ventilation system had been done and now only a few minor alterations were needed. This was not expected to take long. The company might start loading pelleted food into the ship before hearing back from Mr Moyle, because staff and machinery had been brought from Australia and it would be silly to have them waiting.

Mr Tate said the company planned to load several hundred fewer sheep in the Merino Express this time and to lighten the load on the lower decks where most of the deaths occurred.
