Ferry sailing doubt
PA Wellington The rail ferry Arahura may sail today, but only if enough crew sign on for work, says the Cooks and Stewards’ Union secretary, Mr David Graham. The Railways Corporation ship has been tied up since the middle of last week when cooks and stewards announced they would not sail without a full complement of staff. On Friday the cooks and stewards defied a Shipping Industry Tribunal directive to re-
turn to work. Last evening Mr Graham said whether the ship sailed today or later would depend on enough of his union members signing on. The Shipowners’ Association’s executive officer, Ms Carmile Rogers, said the union had departed from long established practices by refusing to sail shorthanded. The action was not because of short staffing but a result of award talks breaking down, she said.
