Cycling Shirley upset in pursuit
Honours were shared at the annual Healing South Island schools’ cycling championships held at Denton Park and Wigram Air Force base at the week-end.
Shirley Boys’ High School, which has dominated the championships in the past, could manage only one win, taking the under 16 years 16km road race.
One of the upsets of the meeting was the ' defeat of Shirley by Christchurch Boys' High School in the over 16 years Italian pursuit. Shirley was the defending champion. Led by Jason M. Smith and being ably supported by John Rastrick, Tim Carswell, and Jonathan Wilson, C.B.H.S. was down 2s going into the final lap. Then Smith turned in a blistering 26.22 s lap, to lead his team to a 2s win over Shirley.
Lisa Gooding (Bumside High School) retained the girls’ open age road title, and figured in her school’s win in the Italian teams’ pursuit. The Burnside girls’ team also won the 10km road race prize. Results. —
