St Albans beats Sydenham in nail-biting finish

In an exciting finish, St Albans just held out Sydenham to win its 60-over game in the women’s senior cricket competition on Saturday.

Sydenham, needing 15 runs from the last over to win, managed only 11, but the result was in doubt until , the last ball was bowled.

It was a game in which the two captains excelled with the bat For St Albans, Brigit Legg top-scored with a well hit 71 not out. Another big contribution came from Vicki Burtt (42), who has now amassed more than 500 runs this season. The side reached 183 in its 60 overs.

Bowling for Sydenham, Sue Brown was positively mean in her concession of runs, with just II coming off her 12 overs. Maia Lewis was also economical.

The Sydenham skipper, Vivienne Cowles, played a fine captain’s knock which almost took her side to victory. Her 75 not out was a determined effort and her best club innings to date. She got good support in the later stages from Maia Lewis, 18, and Trudy Anderson 27. These players really lifted the run rate.

Catherine Campbell and

Tracey McNamara were the tightest of the St Albans attack.

In the second game, Riccarton cruised to a comfortable win over Lancaster Park.

Accurate Riccarton bowling kept the Park batsmen pegged down. They were restricted to just over two runs an over, with Karen Gunn and Sheree Harris both picking up two wickets for 20 runs off their 12 overs.

For Park, sound contributions came from Penny Kinsella (34 n. 0.), Debbie Ford (32) and Nicky Turner (23), but the team score after 60 overs was relatively modest at 135.

In reply, Riccarton paced itself well, passing the Park total in the fifty-first over for the loss of just one wicket. Lesley Murdoch was in fine touch, getting to 59 not out Carol Fleming also played attractively for her 34:

Park used a variety of bowlers but was unable to get an early break-through and the outcome was never in doubt. Scores:— ST ALBANS v. SYDENHAM ST ALBANS A. McKenna run out. . 10
