Distant cars at rally
Vintage cars have been shipped to New Zealand from as far away as Hong Kong for the first Pan Pacific Rally which began in Christchurch yesterday, More than 700 vintage cars will take part in the rally which has been organised by the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand.
According to the secretary of the club, Mr Norman Skivington, most of the entrants are from Australia and New Zealand. Thirty cars were brought by ship from Sydney and Melbourne. The competitors met at Addington Raceway yesterday for an official welcome. It also gave the public an opportunity to see the vehicles on display. A total of 118 different makes of vehicles are represented. Ford is the most popular make, with 99 entries, and there are 66 Austins. The oldest vehicle taking part is .a. 1895 Benz owned by Sir Len Southward, of-Well-ington. — Today will be the first of five rally days. There will be four different routes finishing at Lin-, coin, Akaroa, Amberley and Oxford.
