Aust, warning on defence
NZPA-AAP Canberra
New Zealand’s antinuclear stance threatens to destroy a second important defence agreement that includes Australia, says the Australian Opposition foreign affairs spokesman, Mr Andrew A.N.Z.U.S. had been rendered inoperative, and now the Five Power Defence Arrangement appeared to be heading the same way, he said. The agreement ensures support from Britain, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia if any of its members are under threat Mr Peacock said the
arrangement was an important part of regional security and a symbol of Australia’s continuing strong commitment to the security of the Association of South-east Asian Nations.
. He urged the Australian Government not to “stand idly by" while the agreement fell apart
The Government must clarify the operational and legal status of the arrangement because it was clear from comments attributed to Britain’s Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Fieldhouse, that it was now in danger of unravelling, Mr Peacock said.
