Manager worried over crowd behaviour

The Austrlian cricket team manager, Mr Bob Merriman, admitted being concerned at the unruly behaviour of the crowd over the first three days of the test match at the Basin Reserve.

Greg Matthews was the target of two egg-throwers on Saturday afternoon, one of which hit him. Yesterday afternoon the West Australian, Geoff Marsh, as he chased a ball to the boundary, was almost struck by a flying object which resembled a toilet seat

The Australian captain, Alan Border, complained to the umpires and an announcement was made

that play would stop if there was a recurrence. “It is a concern, certainly,” said Mr Merriman. “I am concerned at the amount of litter that is on the ground. Despite the announcement there was

still a lot on that side of the ground.” Not only have the actions against the Australian players been physical, but some, most notably Matthews, have had to tolerate a barrage of personal abuse as they have made their way through the crowd to

enter or leave the field. Matthews’ story, page 23 Match report, back page
