Teachers’ action
Sir,—By what authority, I wonder, are secondary school teachers able to shut down schools, send the students home and take off to a stop-work meeting to discuss their. pay negotiations? Is this right allowed for in their terms of employment? I recall that a few years ago teachers were anxious that their calling should be recognised as having “professional status.” Since they now appear to be lining up with freezing workers, prison officers, hospital morgue workers, rubbish.collec-
tors, etc., etc., in choosing to take industrial action, does this mean that concept is now abandoned?—Yours, etc., J. R. MITCHELL. Cammbridge, February 17, 1986.
