Teachers’ salaries

<• sir,—to some people the secondary school teachers who are fighting and striking for higher , salaries have, an unwarranted, exalted opinion of their importance in the education system. Primary school teachers are absolutely essential, but I know several people who had no secondary education, yet studied for, and obtained, masters’ degrees at after beginning their studies in their twenties. I also know men who have achieved high office in our society, even that of Prime Minister, without secondary school education. So why all this fuss? Why are they bent on showing that their particular branch of the education force deserves higher pay? There may be a case for higher pay for higher qualifications, but it should be for all teachers, irrespective of what age group they teach, in primary or secondary schools.— Yours, etc., D. MARTIN.
