Boy on attempted rape charge
On a charge of attempting to rape a woman, aged 74, on February 17, a boy, aged 14, appeared before Judge Fogarty in the Children and Young Persons Court yesterday. The boy was charged with assaulting the woman with intent to rape, which ls ! defined under the new Criminal Justice Act as a sexual violation. He also faces a charge of stealing $l9, a transistor radio, and sewing equipment. Sergeant G. C. Jones said that the police wanted a psychiatric report on the boy. He had spoken : to the police
officer who had dealt with i him at length and the boy 2 did not show the usual ! response to such a serious 2 charge. Mr P. N. Dyhrberg said 2 that he had been unable to consult the boy’s : mother about getting him a solicitor or about the ; charges. The boy told Judge Fo- - garty that his mother ; worked full-time and that • he lived at home with his “ brother and sister. His mother was not in court. ' He was remanded in the custody of the Social * Welfare Department to tomorrow.
