550 mining jobs
PA Hamilton Development of the Huntly West mine over the next eight years will create an extra 550 jobs there, according to State Coal Mines.
Longwall machine mining, which is new to New Zealand, will be introduced at the mine from 1988 to boost production to one million tonnes a year.
The mine manager, Mr Peter Mclnally, said the mine will employ 900 people by 1994. About 350 people work at the mine now.
Mr Mclnally said the extra jobs would have a spin-off for Huntly by putting more money into the local economy. State Coal would pay amenity grants
and build new houses, he said.
The Mayor of Huntly, Mr Robin Wright, said his council was still feeling somewhat frustrated in its planning for housing for an increased workforce.
He said that this year the council would have to look at boundary extentions to provide enough land for new housing.
