Japanese films
Two films in the long-est-running series of modern times will screen in Christchurch this evening and on Saturday. ' Sorry, Rocky and James Bond fans, the honour belongs to the “Tora-san” saga from Japan, with 36 films to date. Kiyoshi Atsuni, 57, has played the lead for 18 years, for a total audience of 57 million.
The plots vary little. In each film, Kuruma Torajiro, or Tora-san, finds and loses another love. The irrepressible peddler always returns to his longsuffering family. This evening’s episode, as part of a short Japanese film festival at the Canterbury Museum lecture theatre, is called
“Hearts and Flowers for Tora.” Our hero meets a famous ceramic artist and becomes friendly with his maid. In “Tora-san’s Shattered Romance” on Saturday, he falls in love again. Tomorrow’s film, “Jongara,” is set in a poor fishing village in northern Honshu, and features folk music by Tsugaru Jamisen. Folk music is also the subject of the short cultural film which accompanies this feature. Tpis evening’s ‘short’ examines labour relations, and Saturday’s, the 1975 tour of Japan by The Queen.
Screenings begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
