20km win to O’Sullivan

In spite of an urgent “comfort stop,” Kevin O’Sullivan (University) won the A grade section of the Canterbury Road Running Committee’s 20km graded championships last evening. On the 20km run between Hoon Hay and; Tai Tapu, O’Sullivan built up a 50 second lead over his nearest rivals, John Gamblin (Ashburton) and Kevin Barnes (Christchurch) about the skm mark. He extended this lead before losing “three-quarters of a minute” making the sudden urgent detour. However, O’Sullivan still came in ahead of his rivals in a net time of Ihr 4min 265. Gamblin and Barnes ran

much of the race together and only 3s separated them at the end, Gamblin finishing second in Ihr 6min 6s. Margaret Walker (Christchurch) ran a marvellous time for the women’s section in a net time of Ihr 14min 30s. She was off 14min with the C grade runners. But it was the E grade runners who were stunned because a walker actually led’ the pack in the race. Graham Scatter (Old Boys-Te Kura) used the race as a training walk for his build up for the New -Zealand championships, and, possible Commonwealth Games selection later this year.
