Pairs title to Rennie
Joan Rennie (Rangiora) collected her seventh Christchurch centre women’s bowls title, and her second at pairs, when she won the champion-of-champions pairs at Christ-church-Richmond yesterday.
Mrs Rennie played some brilliant bowls in the middle stages of the final to gain a winning break over Doris Clent (Riccarton Racecourse). After eight ends Mrs Rennie led 6-5, but by the fifteenth she was clear at 14-6.
On four successive ends in this period Mrs Rennie
won heads on which she was down at the changeover, and which were not easy to transform.
However, for the most part her lead, Gladys Cusack, gave her good support, although Mrs Cleat’s lead, Jean Boaz, did hold a slight advantage.
There was a marvellous game in the semi-finals, Mrs Rennie pipping Betty Atkins (Burnside), 14-13, on an extra end. In the previous round Mrs Atkins, whose partner was Pat Shivas, had eliminated the titleholder, April McDonald (Burwood) on an extra end. Mrs Clent
was behind to Daphne Young (Papanui), whose lead was Vera Williams, for much of her semifinal, but a six on the fourteenth end gave her a lead she was able to maintain. Results:—
Quarter-finals: D. Clent (Riccarton Racecourse) 27, C. Garven (Dallington) 13; D. Young (Papanui) 23, D. Russell (Hoon Hay) 8; J. Rennie (Rangiora) 29, K. McCoubrey (New Brighton) 8; B. Atkins (Burnside) 19, A. McDonald (Burwood) 18. Semi-finals: Clent 21, Young 15; Rennie 14, Atkins 13.
Final: Rennie 17, Clent 10.
