Swimmer crosses Cook Strait again

PA Wellington Sydney’s John Koorey on Tuesday completed his second swim across Cook Strait in the good time of 6h 59min.

Koorey, aged 42, struck ideal conditions in his north - south crossing. His previous swim across the strait was in February, 1981, when he swam from the opposite direction in 5h 37min, the fastest south-north crossing at the time.

Koorey began the swim from Cape Terawhiti at 11.15 a.m. and landed at Perano Head. He struck a northerly wind all the way, which he described as rugged. “It was like somebody thumping you on the shoulder all the time,” he said.

His previous northsouth attempt five years ago, failed because he could not handle the cold in the south.
